13" X 18" serigraph In the Buddhist chakra system, as in the Hopi Indian, there are five chakras, relating to the five elements, and five states of consciousness. The starting point is enlightenment, not the fabricated cosmology or elements, colors, seed-syllables. These are symbolic aids in experiening the states of consciousness. The chakra at the top of the head is known as the crown cetner, symbolized by the blue-flaming drop at the top of the print. This is universal consciousness, expressed in the seed-syllable OM, corresponding to the element of ether (akasha). The throat center is the place of life-giving breath and the medium of the sacred Word. The heart chakra is a place of integration, relating to the color red and symbol of fire, the triangle. In the navel chakra where the vital elements are cnetered, the energy is brought down to the emotive level, symbolized by the white circle. When the original universal consciousness is brought down to the root chakra, into the yellow square of earth, the seeds of karma are planted. This is the dark womb of all seeds: ideas, actions, feeling and body, where all is fulfilled by cultivation.
